Newest Updates On the Benefits of Kale!

Researchers identified, now over 45 different flavonoids helping reduce inflammation and oxidative stress.

  • Kale benefits at least 5 different kinds of cancers; ovary, colon, breast and bladder
  • Kale’s glucosinolates help regulate detox and a genetic level.
  • Kale is a super-green we must have in our Juicing Kitchen.

The latest research (below) shows us that there are a multitude of reasons why we should be consuming kale, either steamed, soaked overnight to soften for salads or for juicing. But any way you look at it, in my opinion, kale, in juice form is superior on all levels.

What is the healthiest type of kale to consume?

The darker the better, and my personal favorite is the purple kale. I find it to be dark, and with the darker purple pigment in there, it adds more phytochemicals.

Here’s one of my favorite  kale juice combos:

4 Leaves Purple Kale
1 large Cucumber
4 ribs Celery
1 Lime with skin
1 Green Apple
1/2 inch Ginger Root

Chlorophyll is actually responsible for the green pigmentation in plants. What does chlorophyll do? Chlorophyll is what absorbs energy from the sun to facilitate photosynthesis in plants. Chlorophyll to plants is like blood to humans. It is important in many plant metabolic functions such as growth and respiration.

Also Chlorophyll is chemically similar in composition to that of human blood, except that the central atom in chlorophyll is magnesium, while iron is central in human blood. Healthy Kidneys

Our Kidneys are quite important….it is our filterating system and if it becomes infected or congested, bladder troubles, urinary tract infections and serious problems can arise.  Yet we don’t really speak much about how to take care of our kidneys, so we thought we would write a short blog about what we have studied in these past three decades on how to take good care of our Kidneys. First and foremost let us say that freshly made, organic Cranberry, or Watermelon juices are some of our favourites.  Combined with other fruits helps make them even more important such as combining the Cranberries with the Apples. More on this below. ** The ingredients in these juices help keep our kidneys in good functioning order and working at their optimum.
Also, certain foods we eat can greatly impact the health and overall longevity of our kidneys.  Foods such as flour, either white or wheat, sugar, crackers, red or white meats can greatly harm our kidneys from functioning successfully.  Millions of Americans were eating high protein, flesh food diets to drop weight but they didn’t realize their kidneys were being negatively impacted by the high protein, no fiber foods.  That would include macrobiotic diets as well.   They don’t recommend drinking much water…and our kidneys NEED a flow of water to keep them buoyant, and functioning at their optimum, yet drinking vegetable juices and/or purified water is important, drinking liquids all at once can harm them as well, so try to stretch your liquid intake throughout the day.

**Cranberry Juice
This spectacular berry helps support our kidneys, mostly due to its highly acidic juice. Its acid can help prevent kidney stones from developing. Cranberries contain a chemical called polymer and it is the polymer in cranberries that is responsible for increasing the acidity of your urine as well as helping prevent bacteria from growing.  We don’t recommend drinking the juice cooked, processed or riddled with sugar. You can purchase fresh Cranberries usually from October through February.  Remember, Organic only!
Here’s a great recipe we have been using for many decades:
Cranberry-Apple (Our Pink Flush!)
2 Cups Organic Cranberries (fresh)
2 Organic Red Delicious Apples
Alternate in between juicing the Cranberries with the Apples so that the thick Cranberries get flushed through properly.

Here’s a great tonic we use in the summertime when Watermelon’s are at their peak.
WATERMELON WHIP!
1 small, Organic Watermelon
Directions: Cut into long strips, using the entire Watermelon.
Note:
According to a 1995 Harvard University study, watermelon contains a lot of potassium, which is very helpful in cleaning or washing off the toxic deposits in the kidneys. It is also helpful in reducing the concentration of uric acid in the blood.
Watermelon also has a high water content that induces frequent urination, which is also helpful for cleansing the kidneys. Its antioxidants help ensure good kidney health.

1 1/2 cup Cherries (very low glycemic!)
1 cup Cranberries (fresh)
1 cup Raspberries
1 Red Delicious Apple

This tonic is low glycemic. Most berries are low in natural sugars. It can be a bit tart….if this is so, then add water and ice on a super hot day, or just add about 1/3 to 1/4 cup purified water to thin it out if you ‘don’t want to use an apple, which is a bit higher glycemic wise. Otherwise, you can use a cucumber instead of the apple. This will also help flush through the berries and keep the tonic low glycemic.

Emotionally, these red foods also boost the ‘Heart’ to Open up so we can receive love, as well as give love. THIS is what juicing does for us! It opens doorways to help heal our emotional life as well as purify our bodies.

Because it’s a grinder, it can grind up the cherry seeds and express the juice….until you have had PURE FRESH Cherry juice…..fresh from a juicer, you don’t know what you’re missing. No Energy in the Mornings? Here’s our solution……

Caffeine addicted but….love coffee? Yes, it’s a huge LOVE/HATE addiction. Caffeine will alter your liver and gallbladder’s ability to function normally. It is also highly ACIDIC. I have been witnessing this addiction in people for over 60 years. Coffee drinker’s trademarks are: Yellowing skin, dark spots on skin, dry, brittle nails and pre-mature aging and deep wrinkles on the face. Drinking coffee/caffeine also puts a huge strain on our nervous system, furthering our inability to feel relaxed. Caffeine is a real drug, with long standing withdrawls…..but there is an easy way OUT of this addiction. Here are our suggestions which many people have told us in the past really works and only takes 10 days!

#1. Upon arising, go on a 15 brisk minute WALK in the morning outside for 10 days.

#2. Make 16 ounces of fresh DARK BLACK GRAPE JUICE (Riber) are the best, and juice them with their ‘seeds’. Only dark grapes. This will give you a tremendous amount of instant energy.

#3. Don’t eat any other foods until lunchtime. This will keep your brain’s blood in your brain, instead of your stomach as it’s being called upon to digest heavier foods. *

#4. Drink lots of water throughout the day, at least 64 ounces of purified (preferably highly alkaline water).

#5. When you come home from work, make a soothing supergreen tonic. **

#6. You WILL encounter headaches. This will pass in 48 hours or less.  Within 5 days, you will not encounter any more pain, but you will feel sluggish for another 7 days. But this sluggishness will diminish everyday you stay away from the sodas, black tea or coffee.  Trust in this process!

Within 10 days, you will have overcome your addiction to caffeine and now you will well be on your way to becoming more and more attracted to fresh, organic, green juices, wheatgrass juices and living foods that will enhance your natural energy even more. Coffee WILL and DOES deaden your tastebuds, furthering the downhill addictions to more sugary, acidic foods, and also attracting you to alcohol to help you get ‘down’ from the highs caffeine takes you into.

*If you are sugar sensitive, you can substitute the Dark Grape Tonic with fresh Grapefruit Juice (peel the skin and leave lots of the white pulp).  Add some fresh ginger root to this tonic (approximately 1/2 inch).  Juice 2 grapefruits this way (preferably Ruby Red Grapefruit) and then add the ginger root in between juicing.  If you don’t  like Grapefruit (which is quite low in sugars), you can juice fresh Blueberries.  These two fruits are low in sugars (glycemic index) unless you are diabetic. If you are diabetic, we suggest you consult your physician.

**Here’s my Supergreen Energy Tonic: (this can also be substituted instead of the Dark Grapes for breakfast, or you can juice the grapes one day, then the next day, use this tonic (below).

Jay’s Anti-Caffeine Energy Tonic

6 Ribs Celery

1 Cup Spinach

1 Cup Dandelion Greens

1 Cup Parsley

3 Green Apples (or Red Delicious)

1 large Unwaxed Cucumber

1 small or 2 large Limes with skin

(please all organic!)

Drink 24 to 36 ounces of this tonic daily for two solid weeks.

The first few days you may feel nauseated and headachy and

your bowels may be loose, but this will go away in 24 to 48 hours.

You may LOVE coffee…but it does not love you!

JUICING NUT MILKS…..a new Revolution!

Pecan JUICE?  Yes!

Most of us shy away from nuts, but please don’t.  At the age of almost 90 years old, I must share with you that I have consumed a variety of nuts, weekly, if not daily, for most of my adult life.  Even though they have been touted in the past for being fattening, or salty, or hard to digest…..nuts must be in our diets, consistently if we want to live into our 70′s, 80′s and 90′s with a sound heart.

Nuts are some of the most important foods we can eat as HUMANS.  Pretty strong statement?  Yes, but after 25 years of independent research, more and more confirmations are coming in, stating that human health can be

Did you know Pecans are rich in Vitamin E, Magnesium, Zinc, Potassium and Calcium? They are a true POWER food for the heart.

Did you also know that now….through the evolution of  juicing, we have found a way to JUICE them, extracting the most essential nutrients needed.  Now you have real Power in your hands. Instead of eating the nuts, only absorbing 20 to 30%, burdening the gallbladder of most of us……. you can now cut all that out by juicing them! By juicing them, you are digesting 100% of the nutrients from the nuts…even if you have trouble digesting nuts, don’t worry. When juiced….it liberates your body’s inability to break them down through the process of digestion.

Here’s our favorite PECAN JUICE Combo:


1/2 cup of Organic Pecans (soaked overnight)
2 Bosc Pears
1 cup Water (optional)

Juice all ingredients through our PGP juicer (yes we are the only juicer that can actually juice nuts, seeds and grains, but SOAKED of course).  You can use water to help flush more of almonds through, to create thicker or thinner milk……or just use the pears, as we find this to make a fine consistency.  Once you make your nut milk, within seconds you have a fantastic tonic to add to your fruit juices (combined this way, the oils in the nut milks slow down the fruit sugar’s rush into the bloodstream). Add to your favorite organic cereals, hot teas or just perfect as it is….

We also recommend combining fresh green juices with nut milks.  This makes for a good combination, for better digestion, and also it makes for a solid liquid breakfast.

Our Delicious Spinach Salad!

Spinach, for us is essential.  We love it!  We love to juice spinach (our new juicer, the Power Grind Pro does a great job…..check it out on our site when you can.)

And course, we do love to eat it. Some people just don’t know ‘how’ to use it well except with juicing, so I thought we would share one of our favourites with you that we eat at home frequently.  The Ayurvedic master teachers say that every meal should consist of sweet, sour, pungent, salty, bitter and astringent.  This salad provides these tastes, and quite frankly, we always feel satisfied when eating this salad.

(part of this is cooked, so for the raw foodies out there, you can omit the Quinoa, Chickpeas and substitute roasted oil and pumpkin seeds with regular)

Our Yummy Spinach Salad (for 2)

3 cups Organic Baby Spinach

1/2 cup or 10 Fresh Basil Leaves (chopped)

1/2 cup tamari roasted Pumpkin Seeds

1/2 cup dried Cranberries

3/4 cup Red or Regular Quinoa

1/2 cup Shredded Carrots

1/2 cup Raisins

8 Baby Tomatoes (yellow, orange, red)

Dressing:

1/4 cup toasted Sesame Oil

juice of 1/2 Lime

2 Tbsp. Bragg’s Aminos

pinch of Cayenne Pepper

(whisk all ingredients together, except the oil…add that in slowly)

Directions:

1. Find a big bowl you can share with your loved one!

2.  Add the 3 cups Spinach and chopped Basil to the bottom

3.  Follow with the Cranberries and Raisins, Tomatoes, Pumpkin Seeds

4.  Shred the Carrot or Carrots and add to the salad

5.  Cook the Quinoa (3/4 cup of Quinoa to 1.5 cups water)

6.  Once cooked and (not so hot) add to the salad

7.  Toss and Serve with the dressing.

Spinach…..Oxalate Heaven or Hell?

Many people have written to us over the recent years saying they have been told by their doctors that Spinach is bad for them, not to eat it unless you want kidney stones, etc.,.  Jay and I have been juicing spinach for over 30 years, together…..and we have never had a kidney stone.  So, with this question in mind, it brought me back to research our favourite book, Raw Vegetable Juices by Dr. Norman Walker.  Here’s his quote:

“Spinach should never be eaten when cooked unless we are particularly anxious to accumulate oxalic acid crystals in our kidneys with the consequent pain and kidney trouble. When spinach is cooked or canned, the oxalic acid atoms become inorganic as a result of excessive heat and may form oxalic acid crystals in the kidneys.” (p. 62).

“When the food is raw, whether whole or in the form of juice, every atom in such food is vital ORGANIC and is replete with enzymes. Therefore, the oxalic acid in our raw vegetables and their juices is organic, and as such is not only beneficial but essential for the physiological functions of the body.”

“The oxalic acid in cooked and processed foods, however, is definitely dead, or INORGANIC, and as such is both pernicious and destructive. Oxalic acid readily combines with calcium. If these are both organic, the result is a beneficial constructive combination, as the former helps the digestive assimilation of the latter, at the same time stimulating the peristaltic functions in the body.”

“When the oxalic acid has become INORGANIC by cooking or processing the foods that contain it, then this acid forms an interlocking compound with the calcium even combining with the calcium in other foods eaten during the same meal, destroying the nourishing value of both. This results in such a serious deficiency of calcium that it has been known to cause decomposition of the bones.” (p. 63)

Take the research with a grain of salt, or take it seriously…we just wanted to share with you what we know and have experienced.  Too much of anything is definitely not good for balance in life, so it’s probably best not to be juicing a pound of spinach daily, but to add a cup of spinach into your daily juice or salads seems to us, just to be fine.

Do you realize that when we turn towards SUN FOODS, we are also transforming the Inner, spiritual part of ourselves as well?

First, let’s talk about sunfoods.

What are Sunfoods?   These are foods that grow from the ground, from trees such as fruits, nuts and seeds that become transformed into foods edible for us to consume…..perfectly ripened by the sun.  These are perfect foods, rich with vitality, love and knowledge!

It is precisely these foods that us humans need in order to feel spiritually connected to the planet, and most importantly, to the humanity we so desperately need on this big beautiful Earth.

Did you know, that when the sun’s rays touch the Earth, it stimulates the seed from deep within the ground, to sprout and soar towards the sun? It’s in this mysterious process ~ perfectly designed, by the way, where we need focus our attention, because it’s not just the foods that will help us transform our lives for the better…. it’s the mysterious and magnificent gifts we receive from a higher source that will heal ourselves and our planet when we consume these plant foods and their juices.

For example, if we could feel the pain others feel…. feel the isolation and unfair degredation our brothers and sisters have to endure day by day, our world would change overnight.

Why?  Because when you hurt, I hurt.  It’s that simple.

Yet, if it were that easy, we wouldn’t be facing such an overwhelming dilemma we are facing now.  We need to wake up from the dream we have been living in….When we start to break free from the deep, dark crusts of apathy that wrap around our heart and soul, we begin to truly feel…..we begin to feel the pain of our own disconnection to the world, to ourselves and our loved ones.  This is the beginning of understanding that our diet plays a huge role in the way we think, act and live.

Sunbaked, living foods and their juices will help us wake up from this dark dream we are living in.  Let the colour of these juices stream into your body.  Let the blood of the plant enrich our souls.  It is precisely this act that will help us all understand how much power we have in this world to change, yet the irony is, the more of us change to a plant based diet, the more we ALL transform.

This is the reason why, that the more we teach, come together and unify, the more we can and will heal the entire human race. It may sound like pie in the sky, but actually, if you transform…..others will become inspired and do the same, and this becomes expenontial as we progress.  It’s the fastest and most comprehensive way to enlighten ourselves and our planet, and more and more of us are waking up to this humanitarian new way of living on this beautiful blue Earth.

How do I know this?

When I was a little girl, back in 1960……I distinctly remember imaging what our world would look like when I was older.  Would there be vegetarian restaurants?  It was literally impossible for us to go out to a restaurant with our family back in the 1960′s because we were vegetarians back then.  Only Chinese restaurants had the foods, and even then, one had to be careful….their sauces were laden with animal products such as fish sauces, etc.,.

It’s been 40 years since I had this thought, and look at the world!  Everywhere we go there are vegetarian options.  People by the millions are changing their diets and riding this beautiful new wave of healing.

It is possible!

I wonder what the world will look like 40 years from now?  It’s up to us all to take this farther and farther, deeper and deeper until the majority of the planet is enlightened by choosing a plant based diet.  As we ‘hook up’ to the green juices, the plant based diet foods, we begin to wake up…..and start to see ourselves and our planet quite differently.  We will ‘start’ to bloom inwardly, igniting the spark of compassion, love and understanding, just as naturally as a fragrant red rose blooms in the summertime.

Drinking fresh green juices quicken this process!

These deep, rich and magnificent colours imbedded in these plants, specifically, the esoteric information permeating within these plants…. become filled with divine knowledge, and will….indeed transform our lives into a profound understanding of ‘who’ we really are.

Especially in juice form.

Green juices are powerfully healing in their abilities to quicken this process, yet let’s look at fruit for a moment……

Fruits are the gifts from trees, and are the manifestation of True Love from the Universe.  There are no real words to describe their essence, their beauty or even the purity of their gifts to us.  Have you ever sat under a peach tree…..smelled the fragrance and felt the weight of the branches as they swayed towards the ground during a gentle breeeze in the middle of the summer?

This is exactly what I mean….there are no words, because experiencing is the answer.  I sure hope you invest in our Beloved Mother Nature. She will not just inspire you….. she will thoroughly metamorphosize every cell in your body….enlightening your mind, body and soul.

Fall into the Season!

(By Linda Kordich) As summertime closes, some us of feel a sigh of relief as the sun starts to let up on its intense rays, and others feel a sigh of saddness because for some of us, summer was not long enough.  At least for me and Jay, we only had about six weeks or summertime, but thankfully the peaches, cherries, nectarines, watermelons and fresh corn were quite plentiful.

Do you ever think about how we are ‘all’ integral to the flow of seasons?  Do you eat around the seasons?  Since Jay and I have moved from sunny Southern California three years ago to the far north up here in Washington, we have begun to realize just how important it is to eat foods in our area, and to eat foods that grow in season.  We definitely have four seasons here, yet in San Diego there was really only one season:  Sunny!  This caused us to imagine all fruits and vegetables were in season because, even our health food stores were shipped organic cantaloupes in December from Paraguay, strawberries in November, and corn in February!  If you live in the Southern Hemisphere and get fruits and vegetables from around the Globe year round, ask your Grocer which fruits and veggies are in season….get to know what is most prolific in your local area.  (At the bottom of my blog, you will see a list of general fruits and veggies in season for the Fall in America.)

Through the decades of teaching juicing, Jay and I have begun to realize that buying our produce from our local farmer’s organically, and eating our foods that are in season is vitally important to integrate into our lives.  Plus it puts us on the “Nature Clock” so to speak. Now we are on the wheel of balance, according to Nature……to the Sun’s cycles which in turn, helps us flow into balance with natural biorhythms.  (Let’s not forget too, that eating foods from your area, in season provides more all around nutrients.)

I’m not sure we realize how connected we are to the Universe’s movements, much less our own Earth!  Most of the time we usually become oblivious to the outer world as we get caught up in our inner lives, our worklife and our love life……that we forget ‘where’ we really are and ‘who’ we are.

We experience Summer in the Northern Hemisphere when the Earth is on that part of its orbit where the Northern Hemisphere is oriented more toward the Sun and therefore the Sun rises higher in the sky and is above the horizon longer, and the rays of the Sun strike the ground more directly.

As we approach the visual beauty of Fall, let us embrace Mother Nature’s changes of weather, as She cools us down from hot and blistery, to cooler, wet and thunderous weather.  Let us observe how She turns the colours of leaves into works of art, as they feverously fly through the wind, creating kalidescopes of wind art…….let us be grateful to Her as She delivers us deliciously tasting and colourful fruits and veggies such as pomegranates, persimmons, pears, apples and squash onto our tables.

Most importantly, remember we are all spinning on this great globe called Earth…..let us ‘all’ flow with Her!

Here’s one of our favourite Fall Recipes.

Pomegranate Maddness (all ingredients….organic only please)

1 Large Pomegranate

2 Firm D-Angou Pears

1/2 inch fresh ginger root

1 Large Gala or Fuji Apple

Directions: De-seed the Poms!  Remove as much of the seeds from the pomegranates as possible.  Leave about 5% of the white pith to juice, as it’s very rich (but bitter) in bio-flavinoids that help us get through wintertime without catching a cold.  Start off with a handful of the seeds, then flush through with part of the pear and/or apple. Then add the ginger root, and flush through with the apple or pear.  Finish off with the rest of the seeds, then finish with the apple or pear to make sure all seeds are flushed through the juicer.  If you don’t have a juicer, you can use a blender, and strain until the juice comes through.  Too much pulp creates tiredness and is harder on digestion.  You will absorb MORE nutrients from the juice, than from the blended way.
